In the firing line
At
the height of this dramatic growth, tourism is in the firing line - accused
of destroying culture and the environment. The ever-present tourists cause
many locals to feel like foreigners in their own land. In 1980 the brakes
are applied for a while. Stricter building regulations come into effect,
presenting a barrier to yet further growth in the number of guests.
