A first high point (1890-1914)
Magnificent grand hotels, aristocratic villas and elegant promenades come into being. The luxury of a holiday comes to be taken for granted by the better-off, and Tyrol is a fashionable destination.
Like a Castle
In the grand hotels, as in a royal court, a strict hierarchy of servants is ready and waiting. The legendary Karersee Hotel in which Empress Elizabeth stays has a staff of over 200, including a boatman for trips on the lake.

In the Franco-Prussian war (1870-71) the Prussian army issues plain postcards to their soldiers - to be used for short messages to the family at home. The new form of communication soon becomes popular as a holiday souvenir. Initially the address field occupies one full side of the card. In 1905 this is reduced to half a side, and the illustrated postcard comes into its own.
