The mountain calls (1925-1938)
German films set in the Alps arouse enthusiasm for this landscape yet again. Man against mountain - this struggle fascinates the masses. Climbing and hiking become popular, and skiing opens up a second season.
White peaks and powder snow
Skiing, with its graceful movements in fresh white snow and exciting descents brings a new intoxicating experience of nature. Vitality and sporting ability are a part of the new attitude to life.
A visionary idea
In 1930 the Milan architect Gio Ponti, working for the Tourist Ministry, plans a huge development to open up the Dolomites. A 160 km long network of cable railways is to link Bolzano and Cortina, with hotels complete with restaurants and skilifts at vantage points in between. His "Perfect Tourist Project" is to remain only a vision. In 1936, however, Ponti draws on some of the hotel plans when building the Hotel Paradiso in Martello.
