Visitate l'Alto Adige (1920-1935)
South Tyrol's annexation by Italy brings troubled times, but also new visitors. As soon as the war is over, Italians come in droves as holidaymakers and take over the newly acquired territory.
"South Tyrol" censored
Fascist Italy abolishes many of the German names. They are prohibited from appearing even on postcards. From 1923 onwards the use of the term "Südtirol" becomes a punishable offence.
The origins of mass tourism
"Everything within the state, nothing outside it." In 1925, in accordance with this doctrine of Mussolini's, the leisure organisation "Dopolavoro" (After work) is founded. It presents a popular image and organises - always under the control of the Fascist state apparatus - excursions and short holidays. In 1933 Hitler founds a similar organisation in Germany, the KdF (Kraft durch Freude, or Strength through Joy).
