War in the land of holidays (1914-1919)

The glamorous world of the "Belle Époque" sinks into the mire of the First World War. The front line runs through the former holiday landscape. Hotels are turned into military hospitals or suffer serious damage from bombardment. At the end of the war Tyrol is divided.

The Front as an attraction
The fighting contributes to the myth of the Alps. Films about the Dolomites Front, such as "Maciste alpino" (1916) or "Mountains on fire" (1931) are very popular. After the war the trenches become a tourist attraction.
