Trauttmansdorff. Geschichte(n) eines Schlosses Available in German / Italian: Sven Mieth, Josef Rohrer, Tiziano Rosani: Trauttmansdorff. An account of the eventful history of Trauttmansdorff Castle. Published 2001 [180 p.] Euro 14,00 The book describes 700 years of history of Trauttmansdorff Castle, and the way it also reflects the history of South Tyrol, in a vivid and entertaining way. The art historian Sven Mieth has reconstructed the period from the first reference to the castle in the Middle Ages to the time of the First World War. He describes a warlike commander who commissioned frescos which are still to be seen in the castle, an art-loving Count who gave the castle its name, and Empress Sissi, who enjoyed her stays here so much that she thought of buying the property. The historian Tiziano Rosani has researched the period between 1919 and 1977, and in particular the role of the "Opera Nazionale per i Combattenti" (ONC). The castle was transferred to this charitable fund for Italian veterans after expropriation by the Italian state. By means of hitherto unpublished details, the responsibilities of the ONC in the process of Italianising South Tyrol are described. Trauttmansdorff remained the property of the ONC until 1977, and much of the furnishings and decoration did not survive. In conclusion, Josef Rohrer describes the transfer of the castle to the South Tyrol provincial government and the creation of the botanical gardens and the museum of tourism. |
